Home office statistics estimate that £0.9 billion worth of personal possessions were stolen during the 2001 / 2002 period. This means that every time a burglary occurs people lose on average nearly £1900 worth of their belongings. This is obviously a serious amount of money to anyone.
To put this in a more realistic perspective, the average person in the UK earns £371.25 after tax every week (£1485 after tax per month) and so the average burglary costs people more that five weeks pay.
Still, in the event of a burglary, most peoples home insurance will cover them for losses such as these, right? Wrong. The Home Office has also reported that only 48% of the UK'S burglary victims were insured.
This means that more than half of the people burgled have to pay themselves to replace stolen goods.
How many of us can afford to spend this amount?
However isn't prevention always better than the cure?
